How to Make Thin Hair Look Thicker

Written By Unknown on Sunday, June 22, 2014 | 7:00 AM

I often get emails from folks who are deeply troubled by the appearance of their thinning hair.  They often tell me things like "I just want to look normal again," or "I'm not asking for rock star hair or super model hair, I just want hair that doesn't draw weird or inquisitive stares."  The truth is, products often won't take a skimpy head of hair and make it a hugely voluminous one, but they can help you to make the most of what you've got so that your general appearance is much more improved and acceptable to you.  I'll discuss this more in the following article.

Making Thin Hair More Substantial With Curls, Waves, And Color: Probably the first line of defense is to add volume by adding curls and waves.  This is going to help your strands cover much more ground and territory than they normally would.  You have to be careful though.  If you're shedding or easily losing hair, you don't want to have to use curlers that are going to pull more hair out.  And if you're going to perm your hair, you should chose a stylist who understands what you are facing so that you are using products that are working with you rather than against you.  You have a unique challenge in that often thinning hair has problems holding a curl.  You'll have to use special products for this, which can be harsh. So you'll need to make sure that your specialists at least understands thinning hair and ideally specializes in it.

Coloring your hair can certainly help because the dye coats the hair and therefore makes each individual stand a bit thicker.  Highlights can help a great deal too because they trick the eye into thinking that there are many more layers there than their actually are.  Again, you'll want to find a stylist who can do this without causing more hair loss. If you are shedding very badly, you may want to wait for a reprieve until you give this a try.

The Right Hair Cut For Skimpy Or Thin Hair:  There is a right hair cut for each head of hair.  You must find yours.  Your ideal cut is going to depend on what your texture can best pull off. People who have a fine texture won't be able to pull off layered or feathered cuts because the strands will eventually fall flat against your head.

There's a huge amount of debate as to whether long hair helps or hurts.  Again, this really depends upon the texture.  Fine hair will just look stringy and limp if it is too long.  This is the same with women and with men.  On the other hand, if you cut the hair too short, this will only showcase the white of your scalp in some cases.  So you should ideally keep your hair long enough so that you're assured of coverage, but not too long that you start to develop stringy hair that you can see through on the backs or sides.

Giving More Volume And Lifting From The Root:  Many women tell me that the problem with their thinning strands is that they lack volume.  They just hang there and look limp and sad.  The way around this is to lift your roots when your hair is wet.  You can do this with a towel, clips, or your can put your hair in a very gentle high ponytail as it is drying.  It's best to let your hair dry this way.  I try to avoid heavy blow drying and products as this will often only make more hair fall out.

It's also important to keep you hair clean.  Avoiding shampooing will likely only make this worse unless your shampoo is the problem.  I often tell people to condition before shampooing (to reverse the process) because this will take off the excess build up that can weight down your hair.

Camouflage Or Cover Up?:  There are concealers and powders that you can sprinkle on your scalp to make the white of your scalp blend in with your hair color.  When applied sparingly and properly, these can look pretty good, but they will often accelerate your loss, so I advise using them sparingly.  You can also get little hair pieces and toppers to help give you more to work with.  There are some good ones out there.  But again wherever you place the piece, it will likely accelerate your loss.  So any pieces or camouflages should be saved for when the styling tricks don't work anymore. And make sure your stylist really knows how to blend for the most natural look.

Speaking of not working anymore, the best case scenario is to find out why your hair is thinning and then to address and fix that.  Sure, you can work with what you have.  But, it would be better to start stimulating a healthy scalp and healthy regrowth so that what you have to work with provides more coverage and volume and is therefore easier to deal with altogether.
