Curling irons are like artists' brushes - they need different sizes to achieve different looks. One size brush just won't cut it and neither will one. Curling irons can take you from flat to fabulous in under 10 minutes, but if you don't use the best tool, you may fall short of your goal.
For example, if you want spring curls, use a small barrel - like one that is just ¾ of an inch. If you want simple, pretty curls, use a 1-inch curling iron. But if you want waves of luxurious curls, go with a bigger barrel - maybe 1½ or 2 inches.

Different materials
Curling irons have come a long way since the days when women put an iron rod in the fire to heat it up before using it on their hair. Today, there are metal plated irons, ceramic curling irons and tourmaline ceramic irons. Metal plated curling irons - the first ones on the modern scene - can be hard on your hair simply because hot metal is hard on your hair. They also produce positive ions, which can crack your hair's cuticle, which can damage it and leave it open to humidity.
On the other hand, the heat emanating from ceramic and tourmaline ceramic curling irons can be better regulated. Ceramic produces radiant heat, rather than direct heat. And ceramic and tourmaline irons generate negative ions, which seal the hair and trap the moisture in it.
Temperatures
When choosing it, look for one with a wide range of temperature settings. Most hair requires a temperature of 280 to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Fine hair requires a lower setting. But if your hair is hard to manage or it is thick or coarse, you need one that heats up to about 400 degrees. The best tip is to find the temperature that works for you. Start with the lowest setting and work your way up until you find the temperature that gives you the best results.
Features to consider
One of the top of the line (at least by price) is the T3 Single Pass Whirl with a tapered 1¼-inch barrel. The Single Pass Whirl has lots of features that give you a great deal of control. Made with tourmaline technology, the Whirl taps into the ionic, infrared energy that fights frizz and seals the hair cuticle. The temperature control has an easy-to-read LCD display that helps to ensure an accurate temperature throughout the styling process. It heats up to 450 degrees, which makes it ideal for all hair types. And if you forget to shut it off, this automatically shuts down after one hour. It features a 9-foot, 360 degree swivel cord that makes it incredibly easy to use. It comes with a two-year warranty.
Another high-end model is the HAI Elite Rod ceramic curling iron. It has three digital heat settings, ranging from 180 degrees to 390 degrees. It uses positive/negative ion producing technology and ceramic, ionic far-infrared heat. The cord swivels 360 degrees and it has a built-in surface protector. It is perfect for all hair types.
For maximum benefit, check out the ISO Beauty Interchangeable 5 Barrel curling iron. This set is like getting five curling irons in one, with the interchangeable rods ranging in diameter: ¾ of an inch tapered, 1 inch tapered, ¾ of an inch, 1 inch and 1¼ inches. Each rod is made of tourmaline ceramic plates, which give your hair the smooth finish you want. It features a unique press-action curler that provides longer lasting curls. This is an especially great tool if there is more than one person in the household who wants to style their hair.
Get curling
Now that you have an idea of what curling irons are available, it's time to get curling.
If you have short hair, start at the crown of your head. If you have medium to long hair, start in the back and work your way around.
It's better to curl a little hair at a time. Start with 1 to 2 inches. Starting at the end of the hair, roll the iron to about an inch from your scalp. Count to 10 and release the it by opening it and sliding it out.
If the curl doesn't look good, try again. Or you can use a clip to keep the curl in place while you finish the rest of your head.
Once your curls are created, use a styling spray to hold them in place.
After the spray is dry, remove the clips and finish styling your hair.
There is no doubt that curling irons are a wonderful styling tool. Just don't limit yourself to just one barrel size because there is a world of styles for you to try.
