Do any of the following apply to you? Your hair, once lush and thick, has been thinning over the past few months or years. After shampooing, you find much more hair in the shower drain catch than usual. You color-treat or dye your hair regularly, and find yourself needing to do it more frequently due to color fade. You once had shiny strands but lately, even with the application of shine-boosting treatments or products, your hair just hasn't been its same glossy self. You have faithfully been using the same shampoo and conditioner duo (or just shampoo) for a very long time. Your hair stylist has commented on how your hair seems different, or lately is difficult to cut into your usual style. And lastly, but not least, recently you just don't feel the same sense of satisfaction or confidence about your looks when you see yourself in the mirror, and it's not because you have gained weight or developed wrinkles!

All these signs, and more, point to lackluster hair that is being robbed of life. Many women dismiss it as a normal part of aging-"Oh well, what can you do?" But don't! While it is normal for individual strands to thin slightly over the years, with more advanced thinning occurring after menopause, it is not normal to lose excessive amounts of hair. This is especially true if you are a younger woman (in your thirties or less). If aging isn't responsible for this hair damage, then what could be? It's most likely your shampoo!
Particularly if you have used the same brand of shampoo for many years, chances are your shampoo contains sulfates. While once a very common ingredient in many cleansers (shampoo, body washes, dish detergent, laundry detergent, floor cleaners, to name a few), in recent years studies have been conducted on sulfates in an attempt to see what kind of damage this common ingredient can do. The results have concluded, in short, that while sulfates are fine to use for non-permeable items such as dishes, floors, and the like, they are not suited for use in humans. Since shampoo is a widely-used item, this means that virtually everyone in the United States was putting this potentially toxic chemical on their heads! This chemical strips away the protective keratin on the shafts of the hair, weakening it. The long-term result is hair thinning, hair loss, and lackluster hair.
Fortunately, with this recent research in place, shampoo manufacturers large and small alike have been quick to engineer and offer sulfate-free shampoos to the masses. The result is a product that not only matches the old shampoos in cleansing performance, but also enhances the health of the hair shafts. Beautiful hair for life? It can be done!
