What is an Ingrown Hair?

An ingrown hair is a hair that curls back into the skin or grows sideways into the skin. It is a very common condition for individuals with thick, coarse hair. It may appear as a small bump. If you look closely at the bump, you may be able to see the hair. Common areas where ingrown hairs appear are the bikini area, legs, and beard. They can be embarrassing and frustrating. This is especially true when you are trying to wear a bathing suit. Some women may feel self conscious about their significant other seeing the hair bumps.

What are the symptoms?

Itchy, red inflamed bumps

Tenderness and mild pain

Visible trapped hair in the bump (hair is not always visible)

Blisters on the skin that contain pus

What are the causes?

Ingrown hairs will commonly occur when shaving or waxing has occurred. This is because it cuts the hair off at a blunt sharp edge. Other causes may be improper shaving techniques, dry skin, hair follicles that are blocked with oils, and thick coarse hair.

How to remove the ingrown hair from the bikini line?

Soften the pub hair and reduce inflammation with a hot compress. Before trying to remove the hair, please be sure that the tweezers you are using are sterilize and disinfected in rubbing alcohol. Do not attempt to squeeze the hair out. If you are able to see the hair, gently tweeze it out. It is important to be careful because trying to remove the hair may cause permanent scarring, bleeding, or infection. It is generally not recommended to try this technique due to damaging the skin.

Products Available

There are several products that can be applied to the affected area and will reduce ingrown hair in the bikini line area. These products tend to contain alcohol or witch hazel. They can sting a little but it's well worth it because they do help to reduce the amount of bumps and help them to go away faster.

Swimsuit options

When you have a beach trip planned or you are going to the pool, there are swimsuit styles which will help to cover the ingrown hairs. You may need to allow your skin to heal. Consider a style with shorts or a cute swim skirt. Wear a colorful sarong with a dark colored swimsuit to add a pop of color. Don't stress over your marks or bumps. Just cover it up until you get the problem under control!
