How to Straighten Hair the Healthy Way

A very popular hairstyle these days is sexy sleek hair. Whether the length is short, medium, or long, a straight hairstyle is definitely in fashion right now. However, most women aren't blessed with pin-straight, shiny locks and must go through some styling preparation to obtain this oh-so-desired look. If you are one of these women, follow the steps below and you will have a beautifully shiny head of sleek hair for your night out.

Begin by washing and conditioning your hair with a quality shampoo and conditioner. Straight hair requires deep conditioning to ensure a lot of shine and no static. Pat your hair dry with a towel (never twist or wring wet hair!). Before you begin styling your hair, it must be completely dry. It is recommended that you allow hair to air-dry to avoid even more heat damage, but if you are in a hurry and need to blow dry your hair, try to use an ionic or ceramic hair dryer to reduce drying time and damage. Before drying, apply a styling product that helps protect hair from heat damage, and hopefully does double duty as a shine booster, like Redken's Aerate 08. Apply to the roots of your hair and work through to the ends. Only use a nickel-sized amount. Dry your hair completely if using a hair dryer. If air-drying, wait until your hair is completely dry to begin the next step.

Once your hair is completely dry, comb it gently with a wide tooth comb to remove any tangles. Clip the top 3/4 of your hair on top of your head so that you can style the bottom 1/4 of your hair first. You may wish to lightly spray each section of hair with a heat protecting spray immediately before styling if you did not use any products while it was still wet.

Hold a section of hair at a 90 degree angle from your head. Clamp a flat iron as close to the scalp as possible. Slowly pull the flat iron through to the ends of the hair, holding the hair at a 90 degree angle the entire time. Otherwise it is difficult to tell if the iron is straight, which may result in flipped or curled ends. Repeat this throughout your entire head of hair until you have unclipped and straightened all sections. Wait until your hair cools to comb it, because warm hair is pliable and can bend in the direction that you comb. Apply light hairspray or shine spray if desired.
