Female hair loss (alopecia) is not that uncommon. Although it is not as common as age-related or genetic male pattern baldness, it is common enough to warrant some scientific research. Although the proven therapies are few, there are several things that a woman can do to prevent further thinness or balding and to restore growth.
Shampoo Less Frequently
That might sound like just the opposite of what you would tell some teenagers to do. But, shampooing strips the scalp and hairs of their naturally protective oils.

Chlorinated water has that effect too. Temporary hair loss is very common in regular swimmers. Many of us live in areas where the tap water is chlorinated or contains other chemicals to kill bacteria. Those chemicals damage the skin, scalp and hairs.
Choose a Practical Style
Short styles put less stress on the follicles, so you keep more of the hairs that you have. Styles that require hot combs, teasing or pulling result in fewer hairs on your head and more on your comb.
Take Some Biotin
Female hair loss can be caused by nutritional deficiency. The first thing to check is your iron intake. If that's good and you're not anemic, the nutrient that is probably to blame is biotin.
Even if your intake of biotin seems to be good, it is poorly absorbed by the body. Only a small percentage of the amount in foods actually gets to the bloodstream, where hopefully it will get to the scalp and follicles.
Biotin is responsible for so many different reactions in the body; it's surprising that anyone ever gets enough of it. Most people probably don't. Scientists have even had difficulty determining how much we need. It's that important.
Take Some Horsetail Silica
Female hair loss is sometimes caused by a diet low in amino acids, found in protein-rich foods. You have probably seen shampoos and conditioners that are protein-enriched. Those don't work. Neither the hairs nor the follicles can absorb the protein.
Horsetail silica contains amino acids necessary for the production of hair. It has a long history of use as an herbal remedy for alopecia. It is taken orally, not applied directly.
On that note, it might be necessary to mention that biotin is taken orally, too. Like protein, it cannot be absorbed through the scalp.
Look for Minoxidil
Minoxidil is actually the only FDA approved treatment for female hair loss. Many others are approved for male pattern baldness, but those have proven ineffective for women.
A 2% solution of Minoxidil is applied directly to the scalp and massaged in twice a day. It should be applied after shampooing, not before for best results.
Minoxidil works by dilating the blood vessels, which improves blood flow to the follicles. In the blood are all of the nutrients that the follicles need to be productive.
New injections are being evaluated for female hair loss, but the purpose of the injections is to improve blood flow. With Minoxidil, that is already possible. So, why wait?
