Hairstyling Guidelines for Women

If you are considering getting your hair styled differently, get your research done before you head to your salon. Not all hairstyles will suit you. Each face has unique features and a unique shape and structure. The whole face, the texture of the hair, the colour, the length, etc, have to be taken into consideration before you can decide on the best hairdo for you.

The human face can be broadly categorised into 5 different shapes: Triangular, Square, Round, Oval, and Long. Of course there are several sub-categories and there may be several people with faces that do not fall into any of these categories! But for purposes of this article, we will stick to these most common shapes.

If you are blessed with an oval-shaped face, you are extremely fortunate as you can carry off any hairstyle without raising any eyebrows!

Hair that is styled away from the front of the face, at the temple and forehead, with soft waves or curls vying for attention in level with the chin, or fuller hair at the temple with a fringe cut on the forehead is the best style for those with triangular shaped faces

For a round face, it would be best to let the hair grow long or wear the hair with a side-parting. You can also consider getting a short hair cut in layers. Stay clear of tight buns, short bob cuts, and fringes.

A square face would look great with a fringe that is cut diagonally. If the hair is worn up most of the time, it would be good to have some bounce below the ears and chin. Short hair looks good too and should be worn just a little below the chin if the hair is curly or very thick. For straight hair, a slanting fringe is ideal in front leaving the hair long behind.

If you have curly hair, wait until your hair is completely dry before you go in for a haircut. And make sure that the hairstylist doesn't leave your hair looking uneven and frizzy. A careless haircut can ruin your naturally curly hair so select your salon with care. Avoid blunt cuts at all costs.

Straight hair is very easy to style. Just a different parting can give you a totally different appearance. Lowlights work better with straight hair rather than highlights which tend to make the hair look lined and unnatural.

Depending on your outlook, having wavy hair is like having the best of both worlds or being neither here nor there! But, frankly, wavy hair is about the best naturally styled hair that can happen to anybody. It is very easy to maintain and gives a naturally healthy and bouncy look. With just a little styling mousse you can get the look you want in a jiffy.

Always check with your hairstylist if the style you've chosen will suit you before you take the plunge. Carrying a photograph of the type of cut or style you want will give the hairstylist a clear idea of what you want, instead of trying to explain it. If your hairstyle looks bad, don't panic, just remind yourself that it will all grow out soon enough and you can try out another hairstyle within a few months!
